Unknown Artist and Source
I chose this mask because I liked the shape and colors. I was drawn to the animal like shape because I identified it as a cat or dog considering the curved short ears and the shape of the nose. I appreciated the color combination of intense pink, teal, and red against neutral blocks of color. I felt my own style follows these color choices. Finally I appreciated the illusion of texture with the short stubby marks all around the mask that resemble fur.

I chose this mask for two main reasons. First, it reminded me of the Anonymous mask, which is a stylised depiction of Guy Fawkes, the best-known member of the Gunpowder Plot. Secondly I couldn’t scroll too far past the creepy Mona Lisa-esque smirk. The expression seems to be carefully calculated and interested me the most. Yellow is typically known to be a “happy” color but here it appears nearly sinister. The emphasis placed on the bright red disproportional lips does not help.

I like this mask because of the shapes and feeling of movement you get from these shapes and linework. The extending curves off the nose and beak are very pretty and tie into the same scallop shape on top of the head. The additional white lines add more direction and movement to the piece, unifying everything and providing unity.
4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.
The first thing I decided to conquer with my mask was texture. I chose Legos because I was attracted to using something “modern”, from my generation. Color seemed like the obvious next step. I chose these colors because they were all I had but also because I like bright colors. I decided to use negative space in the eye holes to create more interest and functionality to the mask.
5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.
I chose to work with a material I was uncomfortable with, thus not fully enjoying what I created. I like the idea of the project but I wish I would’ve used a material I was more comfortable with.
