Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
Edgar Degas
Degas à la redingote noire (Self-Portrait), ca. 1854-1855
Oil on canvas
I picked this piece as inspiration because I liked the direct eye contact with the viewer. It almost seems as if Degas is looking at you in passing. This inspired me to use the pose I did in my own self-portrait, glancing over my shoulder at the viewer.
Horace Pippin
Self-Portrait, 1941
oil on canvas board
I picked this piece as inspiration because I liked the crisp lines in the painting. It seems almost comic strip esque. I mimicked these crisp, clean lines in my own work instead of blending and blurring the paint to make soft edges.
Edgar Degas
Portrait de Mlle Rose Caron (Portrait of Rose Caron), ca. 1892
oil on canvas
I picked this piece as inspiration because of the colors. I was drawn immediately to the yellows, pinks, and blues in their muted tones. I chose to use these base colors in my own self-portrait.
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
I marker because it is my favorite drawing mediu. I love the quick drying time that allows me to experiment fearlessly and make split second decisions.
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?
I was unsure how to bring a realistic element. I decided to keep my lines wild and sketchy to create a more abstracted effect.
4. How does this piece represent you?
I wanted to push the concept of something being more than what you see.
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
I used sketchy lines, dark colors, and high contrast in value to make this work.
6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
Yes,I love self reflection as a method of improvement.
7. What do you think of your final artwork?
I am pleased with the final product although I know I could improve some technical proportions. I could have also went deeper with detail and I regret not doing that.
