More Human Than Human
Based on the video, "More Human Than Human?"
1. What are the most interesting discoveries you made watching this video?
The human body is fascinating to all people. It also has been idealized to the point of unrealistic standards.
2. What do you think about Vilayanur S. Ramachandran theory with the chicks?
The red strips are similar to the Venus of Willendorf because they are based on features that are desired the most and which are considered the most important. This was really interesting to me because we always want an extreme to what is desired. So, naturally the more red strips that are visible the more the chicks want it. Likewise, the curvier a woman is, the more desired she is.
3. Do you see any connection between the art/subjects in this video (Venus of Willendorf, the Herring gull chicks, Egyptian images of the human body, Kritian Boy) and the way the human body is portrayed today?
Yes. The art shown represents idealized figures. Women are usually very curvy, meaning they're very fertile. Women are seen as objects who give birth, therefore if we are not curvy... we are useless and "not good enough."Likewise, women usually have prominent features, like the red strip on the seagulls beak or curvy hips, that are attractions and stimulations to people. The more curves or red strips, the more desire they are.
