1.) Photoshop Workspace:

You can change the layout of the workspace in photoshop to best fit your needs.

2.) Photoshop Layers:

You can add as many layers as you want and filter them or hide them as you're working. You can save each layer along the way.

3.) Selections 101:

Selection is one of the most important tools to know in photoshop. What you select is an isolated part of an image you choose to control and work on. CTRL D will get rid of a selection. You can reselect your most recent selection in the pulldown selection menu.

4.) Photoshop Filters:

Smart objects option in filters drop down menu is useful, but not always. If not, duplicate layer before applying filter. You can select to isolate the background for a filter in select drop down menu. You can change the intensity of filters by clicking icons shown in layers.
