final evaluation

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? I didn't really have any expectations for this course, I never really know what to expect because I'm not one to read course descriptions. I've been in college for so long, I just take what I need to in order to graduate and don't research it beforehand because either way I'll have to take it.  2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting? That's still a really vague question. Art is a movement of movements. It's emotions and political statements. It's a response to the quality of life of it's time.  3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?  My favorite was and always will be Frida Kahlo. I feel deeply connected to her.  4. Now that y...

Why did you select the inspiration pieces? Edgar Degas Degas à la redingote noire (Self-Portrait), ca. 1854-1855 Oil on canvas I picked this piece as inspiration because I liked the direct eye contact with the viewer. It almost seems as if Degas is looking at you in passing. This inspired me to use the pose I did in my own self-portrait, glancing over my shoulder at the viewer. Horace Pippin Self-Portrait , 1941 oil on canvas board I picked this piece as inspiration because I liked the crisp lines in the painting. It seems almost comic strip esque. I mimicked these crisp, clean lines  in my own work instead of blending and blurring the paint to make soft edges. Edgar Degas Portrait de Mlle Rose Caron (Portrait of Rose Caron), ca. 1892 oil on canvas I picked this piece as inspiration because of the colors. I was drawn immediately to the yellows, pinks, and blues in their muted tones. I chose to use these base colors in my own self-portrait. 2. Wh...

module 13 and 14

For this project I chose to do Pop Art as my theme because I personally enjoy pop art. I chose artist that were pivotal in the movement, people who other artists found great inspiration from. It was definitely a tedious process to make the slide show and do research on 10 artists, but I learned a lot about works of art that I simply enjoyed looking at.

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. “The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art” : Lowbrow is an art movement with origins in the underground comic world, punk music, “hot-rod street culture”, and other California subcultures. It is also often known by the name pop surrealism. Some of the giants of lowbrow art were considered to be Big Daddy Roth and Robert Williams. Many people were underground cartoonists. Some lowbrow artists went on to work for Disney as well. Lowbrow artists seems concentrated on creating non-conceptual art and creating “fun” and exciting pieces. Tate Modern: This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated. An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Philippe de Montebello served for 31 years as Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. 1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. I chose the Andy Warhol video as my first video because I love his work, and I wanted to watch a video about him to learn more about him.The second video I chose was on Henry Moore because I don't know much about him.  2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The video about Andy Warhol was  informative. The main thing discussed was this concept called "Silk Screening" which was a signature technique Warhol used to create colorful pop culture prints. The use of repetition is also a signature "trademark" of Warhol's work, like the soup cans. The repetition is to mimic the visual culture we are fed every day and the impact seeing something so many times has. From the Henry Moore video, I learned family was a major concept throughout his work. He used the image of a  mother and child very often. Henry Moore was influenced by human conn...

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. I chose The Impact of Cubism because I wanted to know some of the details of the movement. I like the geometry of cubism as well so it is always interesting to learn more about it. I chose to watch Matisse and Picasso because both artists made monumental contributions to the art scene. It is always inspiring to learn about those who go against the grain. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The Impact of Cubism discussed Juan Gris and Picasso, working in the same house in Paris. During this time, Picasso painted the famous Les Demoiselles d' Avignon and Gris, a homage to Picasso in the form of a self portrait. Other artists like Duchamp and Delaunay were also discussed. Cubism was used to discuss war as seen with Juan Gris with “ The Breakfast Table ”. Delaunay's Eiffel Tower explored philosophical theories about time and memory. Sonia Delaunay cap...
